My conception of teaching, and of the nature of the relationship between students and teachers, emerges directly from my interest in the value of human relations generally. The relationship between a teacher and students is just that: a particular type of relationship with its own characteristic norms, obligations, and goods. One core feature of the pedagogical relationship, I believe, is that students and their teachers facilitate one another’s intellectual development. I strongly believe that this facilitation goes both ways, and that this is where the real value of the relationship lies for both parties.
